“Stress is not what happens to us. It’s our response to what happens. And response is something we can choose.” Maureen Killoran

Constant headaches, and muscle tension due to stress is not normal and should never be considered a part of an average day. These are signs of a problem, which if not taken care of will lead to further and worse problems.

Stress can kill. Stress can make you sick. It has been found that psychological stress can cause sudden death by increasing the chances that abnormal heart rhythms occur. Stress can cause effects on nearly all of the major system in our bodies, creating a huge list of health problems. Among them are diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, allergies, and asthma.

If You Don’t Take Over Stress, Stress Will Take Over You!

Stress is part of life and all of us experience it on a daily basis, with particularly stressful periods from time to time. However, people’s ability to cope with stress varies significantly and if you find it difficult to manage your stress levels at certain times in your life, help is at hand.

Believe it or not stress is one of our bodies defence mechanisms. For the majority of our time on earth man has had to rely on his wits, strength and speed to survive. Anxiety is the way your body prepares itself to react to fear and danger. This is known as the “fight or flight response” – when you are afraid, certain chemical and physical changes occur which make the body quicker at running away from the threat (“flight”) or more able to aggressively deal with it (“fight”). When chased by a Sabre toothed Tiger negotiation wasn’t an option. The stress response supplied an instant hit of chemicals to the body that diverted blood away from non essential tasks (like digesting lunch) to more pressing problems, like staying alive! For ancient man the stress response was short lived, he was either caught or eaten, or else he escaped. Unfortunately modern man cannot outrun his stress response, and whilst he may not literally be some bodies else’s dinner, he often feels eaten up by the relentless stresses and strains of life.

Anxiety, stress and worrying don’t actually help you

There are very few people who have never felt anxiety or stress. So many things in life can cause anxiety – worrying about money, worrying about our health, worrying about our family or friends, fear of meeting new people, fear of loss (of a job, a house, a relationship, of status), fear of embarrassment, fear of being physically or emotionally hurt, fear of flying, of public speaking, or of needles, spiders, dogs, there are too many variations to set out. For early humans, anxiety and fear DID help – our predecessors feared vicious animals, other people, and situations which were potentially dangerous, and the fear they felt helped them to survive. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.

The stress response also helps you rise to meet challenges. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration when you’re attempting the game-winning free throw, or drives you to study for an exam when you’d rather be watching TV.

But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life.
