Around 106,000 people die prematurely from smoking related illnesses every year in the UK alone. Many smoking related deaths are not quick deaths and smokers can expect years of illness and distressing symptoms before they die. The younger you are when you start smoking, the more likely you are to smoke for longer and die early from smoking Even for those who do not develop a life-threatening illness as a result of smoking, quality of life can be impeded by shortness of breath and aggravation of other conditions, such as asthma.

Although the deadly affects of smoking may be invisible at first, one thing that you can’t help but notice as a smoker is the detrimental affects it has on your appearance. In 1985 the term ‘smoker’s face’ was added to the medical dictionary. The characteristics of a smoker’s face, which tends to make people look older than they are, was defined as lines or wrinkles on the face, particularly radiating at right angles from the upper and lower lips or corners of the eyes, deep lines on the cheeks or numerous shallow lines on the cheeks and lower jaw. A subtle gauntness of the features, with prominence of the underlying bony contours and a grey skin parlour. Sound familiar?

Statistics also show that as well as having stained teeth and bad breath smokers are up to six times more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers, which can result in advanced decay and tooth loss. That’s the ugly reality of smoking that the advertisers failed to mention when they tried to promote smoking as attractive.

If you are smoking around 20 cigarettes a day, then you will be at least £2000 a year worse off, that’s £10,000 in just five years! Think what you could be doing with that money instead; taking your family on wonderful holidays, buying a new car, paying off the mortgage, saving for your retirement, because yes, you can enjoy a long and healthy retirement once you have kicked the habit for good! What’s more, the cost of smoking is constantly rising and, following the nationwide ban on smoking in public buildings, smokers are becoming increasingly polarised.

I know that quitting any long standing addiction isn’t easy, but I can also assure you that hypnosis, NLP and CBT interventions have been proven to deliver permanent results and at Lynn Ward Hypnotherapy, it is my aim to help you quit smoking for good, even if you’ve been a heavy smoker for several years. It is possible to become so educated and motivated that the deep inner part of your mind no longer sees ending nicotine use as a threat, so much so that you will be amazed at how quickly your body and mind recover from the madness of addiction.
